How Invisalign works

You wear a series of custom aligners, each one shaped slightly differently from the last. Each aligner moves the teeth a small, planned amount, and after about two weeks you swap to the next in the series.

Small tooth-colored attachments are often bonded to a few teeth to give the aligners something to push against, and elastics are sometimes added for bite correction.

What aligners are good at, and what they are not

Aligners handle crowding, spacing and gaps, rotated teeth, mild to moderate bite issues, and relapse after an earlier round of braces very well indeed.

Where they get less predictable is significant vertical movement, large rotations of round teeth like canines and premolars, closing space left by extractions, and skeletal bite problems in a child who is still growing.

Sometimes the answer is aligners. Sometimes it is ceramic braces, which are far less visible than most adults expect. You can eat what you want, because the aligners come out. There is nothing to break before a game or a concert, so swimming, football, and the clarinet all carry on unchanged. The honest caveat is the same one for adults, and it is bigger for a fourteen-year-old: aligners only work if they are worn. Some teenagers are excellent about it and some are not, and if a teenager is not going to wear them, braces will finish faster and better.
