Dr. Shank sponsors teams at Hauppauge High School. He also backs teams at Accompsett Middle School, Great Hollow Middle School, Smithtown High School East, and Smithtown High School West, and has sponsored local Little League for thirty years. There is a reason a Hauppauge page starts there rather than with a list of services. Hauppauge has orthodontists of its own, several of them, and a practice ten minutes up Route 111 does not get to claim the hamlet by proximity. What it can honestly say is that it has been part of Hauppauge school sports for years, before anyone thought to write a web page about it. Hauppauge is in the Town of Smithtown

Worth stating, because the zip code sends people the wrong way. Hauppauge is 11788, not 11787, and it is a hamlet of the Town of Smithtown. Blydenburgh County Park, where the Stump Pond loop runs, sits on the boundary between Hauppauge and Smithtown proper and is about two miles from the office. So the trip from Hauppauge to Smithtown is a trip across one town, not between two. Blydenburgh is a fair example of what that means in practice: the Stump Pond loop draws walkers from Hauppauge and Smithtown in roughly equal measure, and nobody walking it thinks of themselves as having left home. Practically, it means Hauppauge families are inside the same school-sports calendar, the same weekday traffic, and the same set of appointment times as families living a mile from the office.

Ten minutes up 111

Route 111 north from Hauppauge runs straight into Smithtown and meets Route 25 at the village. Turn east onto East Main Street and the office is at number 200, in the Colonial Building past Town Hall. About ten minutes. From the western side of Hauppauge near Townline Road, Route 454 to 111 is the cleaner run. From the industrial park and the Veterans Memorial Highway side, 347 east to the Route 25 junction and then into the village works better in afternoon traffic.

Scheduling around a Hauppauge school year

Orthodontic treatment runs eighteen months to two years, with appointments every four to eight weeks. For a high school student that is a lot of school days, unless the office opens early enough to avoid them. Monday and Thursday appointments begin at 8:00 AM. Tuesday appointments run until 8:00 PM, which clears afternoon practices and games. Wednesday and Friday are morning sessions ending at 1:00 PM. Longer visits like bonding and debonding get the early slots; short adjustments fit anywhere.

The full range, all of it planned and adjusted by the same doctor: metal and ceramic braces, Invisalign and clear aligners, early treatment for children around age seven, two-phase treatment where jaw growth needs guiding, retainers, adult treatment and re-treatment, and emergency appointments for loose brackets and poking wires. Dr. Shank is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and a Clinical Assistant Professor at Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine, where he teaches residents in the specialty.

Fees

One fee covers records, all appliances, every visit including emergencies, and the first set of retainers. In-house payment plans carry no interest and start around $150 a month, with no credit check and no outside lender. The practice accepts most dental insurance plans and is not in-network with any carrier, which we say at the consultation rather than later. HSA and FSA funds can be applied.
